The Himalayan Health Expedition Experience

Snow capped mountains towering above her, sand stuck to her wet boots, rocks beneath her feet, and a beautiful river in the distance. When Dr. Nupur Trivedi tries to describe her expedition to curious friends, family, or acquaintances she tells them to imagine themselves in her waterlogged boots, due to a fall in the river and hiking in the most fascinating place they can imagine.

“Every twist and turn of that hike made me fall in love with this corner of the Earth that was tucked away, uncovered by so few.”

She says, “It was a trip of a lifetime. It was so personable, the perfect mix of professionalism and fun. It gave me reassurance when things were a little sideways and enough comedy to remember that this is an expedition: where nothing is guaranteed and anything could happen.”

IMG-20170511-WA0005“The expedition was very professionally organised, supported and executed to provide an exceptional experience. I’ve also been very happy to recommend the programme to friends and colleagues.

I worked at 15 clinics in remote Trans Himalayan regions. Attended to 3024 patients with my team, been to 3 schools and a monastery where I did well checks of the children and the monks, respectively.

I also had the chance to give Oral Health Talk to an assembly of 400 students.

I also performed extractions, restorative procedures and educated the patients on oral health. Overall, I have attended around 1900 patients. I was responsible for teaching dentistry skills to 30 medical students from the United States, Australia, Hong Kong and United Kingdom.

I always knew I wanted to help the patients, but I never knew that my work could change me in such a tremendous way. Over the past five years my college education has shaped me into who I am today, giving me the tools I need to succeed in life. Even though I will embark on a new journey, in a new environment next year, I hope that the steps I have taken will improve my way of working with the patients and it will live on.

I consider all of this an incredible privilege, and I’m desperate to spend more time in this part of the world.”

Again, a huge thank you for all the support from Karnavati School of Dentistry. It has been a good learning experience and it will always be an enduring memory.
